About Childhood Education and Literacy Studies
The Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies is dedicated to research-based pedagogy and the lifelong development of professionals in Literacy Education, Early Childhood, and Elementary Education.
Our department houses two doctoral programs: one in Reading/Language Arts and one in Early Childhood. Our doctoral programs prepare individuals who aspire to become researchers and scholars in the fields of Literacy Studies (with specializations in emergent, elementary, and adolescent literacy as well as college reading) or Early Childhood.
Students who wish to pursue a Master's degree can choose from the following: a Masters of Arts (MA) in Reading for K-12 educators who are interested in careers in teaching reading or coaching/administration of literacy programs; a Masters of Education (MEd) in Early Childhood Education for professionals who are interested in careers related to Early Childhood programs and services; and a Master of Arts In Teaching (MAT) in Elementary Education for students who have undergraduate degrees in other fields and are interested in teaching in the elementary grades.
Two Bachelor of Science degrees are available. The B.S. in Elementary Education/ESOL is for students who want to teach students in grades K-6, and the B.S. in Early Childhood Education/ESOL is for students who want to work with children from age 3 through grade 3.
In addition, we offer a Graduate Certificate in Reading Certificate and Endorsement Program.
