Esra Akin-Kivanç Has Article Published in Peer-reviewed Journal

Saturday, January 02, 2016

Assistant Professor of Non-Western Art History Esra Akin-Kivanç has completed an article published in the Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association, a peer-reviewed journal that is published semiannually by the Indiana University Press.

Her article Mustafa Âli's Epic Deeds of Artists and New Approaches to Written Sources of Ottoman Art deals with Middle East studies.

The article gives a cross-cultural approach to Ottoman artists' biographies by revisiting Mustafa Âli's Epic Deeds of Artists, the earliest known source about the lives of Muslim calligraphers, painters, and book binders. In the article, Ali's work is contrasted with Persian and Italian predecessors while emphasizing the text's creative process and dispelling Euro-centric bias.
