Director of the BizComm Center, Pat Nickinson works with faculty teaching writing-intensive classes in the College of Business to help their students develop professional writing and presentation skills. She trains and oversees a staff of students who provide free, high-quality one-on-one writing consultations for all business students. Nickinson also assists in writing and copyediting major reports for the college. Beginning Fall 2013, she is co-teaching newly created courses in professional communications for MBAs and new PhD students in the college.
Nickinson's writing and editing skills come from writing dozens of newspaper feature stories, working as a technical writer for the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, and copyediting academic manuscripts in the summers for the now-defunct Associated University Presses. She earned BAs in psychology (University of West Florida) and communications studies (Virginia Tech), where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She continued at Virginia Tech to complete an MA in English (rhetoric and composition focus) before her PhD in English from Penn State, where she worked in Penn State's thriving tutoring center, taught both technical writing and literature courses, and completed a dissertation on hero-damsel dynamics in British medieval chivalric romances. Nickinson joined the English Department at USF in 2001, where she taught contemporary Native American and Caribbean fiction as well as the occasional composition course. In 2007, Nickinson joined USF's College of Business to create the BizComm Center.
