Computing Education

The University of South Florida offers several bachelor degree programs in the Computing domain. The variety of options available on campus can sometimes be very confusing for students as they try to decide which major is best for their interests and needs. Computing careers can sometimes be very difficult to decide upon considering the vast number of options, market demands, and variety of domains available for employment. This page has been added to our site to specifically address this concern in hopes of helping students better understand why they may choose one Computing related degree over another at the University of South Florida.

Brief Description: This degree provides the skills and knowledge necessary for information systems development and support positions in both business and non-business organizations.

Why would a student choose this degree? Students who choose this degree program are interested in working for a company or starting their own company that uses technology in some useful way. The student may be interested in developing software, supporting software, managing information technology resources, managing information technology projects, analyzing information processes, designing information systems, developing databases, or analyzing data from any of a variety of business domains. A business domain could include industries such as health care, financial, communications, legal, consulting, or marketing. The degree does not necessarily focus on one specific business domain. The primary focus of this degree is to immerse the student in a variety of core technical and soft skills that will allow them to work in any domain within industry.

Brief Description: This degree focuses on the design, development, and application of software systems. Additional course work in algorithms, discrete structures, object oriented design, data structures, operating systems, digital logic design, computer architecture, and a wide range of advanced electives extend and supplement the core.

Brief Description: This degree emphasizes the application of engineering principles to the design of computer hardware and software and devotes additional time to issues of computer architecture and advanced topics in hardware design, including extensive laboratory work. Students in this program also acquire a broad background in engineering topics through related course work in the college.
