Online Master of Business Administration
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply with a three-year undergraduate degree?
We require the equivalent of a four-year undergraduate degree.
Does my undergraduate degree or my professional experience have to be in business?
No. Applicants must hold a degree from a regionally accredited undergraduate institution in the United States or from a recognized institution in a foreign country, but MBA students come from a myriad of backgrounds. They hold undergraduate degrees from a variety of areas, such as business, psychology, communications, medicine, education, engineering, arts, or architecture. Students work in fields as varied as sales, education, military, manufacturing, healthcare, marketing, technology, the arts, banking, or professional sports.
Do I need work experience in order to qualify for admission?
Our students have an average of five years of full-time professional working experience. Our students have varied work backgrounds and different levels of experience.
What should I include in my resume if I do not have extensive work experience?
Your résumé should note your degree(s) earned, academic honors and awards, internships, extra-curricular activities (including volunteering and community service), international experiences, and any other activities that demonstrate your leadership qualities. Of course, your résumé should also include your work experience. List any professional positions you have held, describe your job responsibilities, promotions, awards, leadership and management skills, and cite your experience working in teams.
What does the admissions committee look for?
The admissions committee bases its decision on the strength of the application as a whole. Current students have an average of five years of professional working experience, as well as an excellent academic record. For the most recent classes, the GMAT average has been around 560. We strongly recommend that you prepare well before taking the GMAT. A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university is required. Outstanding qualities or accomplishments in one area might overcome weakness in a different area.
Can I send my application to the department for an evaluation before I apply?
We welcome queries but cannot review application materials and 'pre-admit' students to the program before the complete application is submitted and reviewed by the admissions committee.
Do I need to take the GRE or GMAT?
Yes, these are essential components of the application. However, applicants may choose to take either the GRE or GMAT (preferred).
Applicants with five or more years of managerial experience may request a waiver. To request consideration for a GMAT/GRE waiver, students must have extensive work experience in a career with upward mobility and a minimum of five years of managerial experience. This significant managerial experience includes, but is not limited to, hiring/firing and significant budgetary authority combined with additional positive academic credentials. PLEASE NOTE: Waiver forms will only be considered if the MBA application is otherwise complete. Download the GMAT Waiver Form.
What is the minimum accepted GRE/GMAT score?
We don't post a minimum GRE or GMAT score as we evaluate the whole application, not a single score. For the most recent classes, the average GMAT score has been approximately 570.
I took the GRE/GMAT a few years ago. Will I have to re-take the test?
These scores are only valid for five years. If you took the test more than five years ago, you will need to re-take the test.
Do I need to take the TOEFL? What is the minimum accepted score?
We require TOEFL scores from applicants whose native language is not English or who earned baccalaureate degrees from non-English speaking institutions. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 for the paper version, 213 for the computer-based, or 79 for the Internet-based. Applicants must also score at least a 25 on the verbal section of the GMAT. View more information about english proficiency.
I just got admitted. What do I do next?
Your program advisor will provide registration instructions once admissions have been finalized. In the meantime, you should complete any other requirements that are outstanding with the university such as immunizations, immigration, etc.
How long will it take to complete my degree requirements?
USF's online MBA is a 32-credit hour program. Non-business majors are required to take pre-requisite business foundation courses (16 credit hours) after being accepted into the program. Candidates who earned a business degree within the last seven years from regionally accredited business programs might be able to skip some of these classes after a coursework review.
The full-time student will need at least four semesters to complete the program (this timeline does not include additional foundation courses). Part-time students can complete all work within approximately three years. Students must complete all coursework within five years.
How many classes do students take each semester?
Full-time students take at least nine credit hours of courses each semester. Part-time students are encouraged to take two courses per semester and must complete 12 hours per calendar year to remain on active status as a degree-seeking student.
Are there any portions of the program that must be completed on campus?
Yes. Students will participate in a new student, three-day, residency session on the USF Tampa at the start of the program and students will return to campus for three-days for the capstone course at the end of the final term.
