Florida Center for Cybersecurity launches new educational program for veterans through JPMorgan Chase "New Skills at Work" Initiative

Kicking off with 20 students in the spring, program will develop skills, provide internships and industry certifications

TAMPA, Florida - June 24, 2015 — A new program at the Florida Center for Cybersecurity (FC2), a statewide center located at the University of South Florida, will prepare veterans for jobs in the fast-growing cybersecurity field with a focus on incident response. The program is funded by a $300,000 grant from JPMorgan Chase & Co., as part of the firm's global "New Skills at Work" initiative that promotes workforce development for high-demand industries.

According to U.S. News and World Report's Top 100 Jobs in 2015 list, information security analyst is the eighth best job in the United States and openings are expected to increase 36.5 percent by 2022. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists median pay at $88,890 per year, as reported in 2014.These trends are behind the creation of FC2 which opened its doors July 1, 2014 and is tasked with positioning the state as the national leader in cybersecurity and its related workforce through education, community engagement and innovative, interdisciplinary research.

The program-- "New Skills for a New Fight" -- is set to begin next spring with 20 student veterans who will participate in 24 weeks of fast-paced training in networking, programming, network operations, and security. Students will graduate with an undergraduate certificate, multiple industry certifications and will also gain hands-on industry experience through 12-week internships. Graduates of this program will be able to work full time in entry level analyst roles while pursuing their undergraduate degree online or part time.

"Veterans bring a unique set of skills to the cybersecurity field and opportunities to harness their talent will create a strong talent pipeline for all industries in our country," said Sen. Mel Martinez, chairman for JPMorgan Chase in the Southeast U.S.
Working in collaboration with USF's top-ranked Office of Veterans Services, MacDill Air Force Base and industry partners, the FC2 program will tap into Florida's large veteran population and offer a post-military career path to meet the demand for skilled professionals who are workforce ready.

"As a statewide center, it was important to us to develop a program that not only had the right components in terms of curriculum, but one that could be replicated to create even greater economic impact across Florida. JPMorgan Chase's generous support has given us the resources to launch this program and we are very grateful," said Sri Sridharan, managing director and chief operating officer of the Florida Center for Cybersecurity.

The new program also expands on JPMorgan Chase ongoing efforts to promote veterans' successful transition into civilian life through programs focused on employment, housing and education. In 2013, USF received a grant from JPMorgan Chase in support of its student veteran program – one of a handful of grants awarded to universities working to support veterans pursuing degrees.

"Our nation needs to create pathways to support the more than 1 million veterans transitioning to life outside of the uniform and there is no better way than to help them be ready to take on jobs in the industries that have the highest demand for talent," said Jim Cummings, Chief Security Officer, and head of Global Security and Military Affairs, JPMorgan Chase.
The new program is part of a broader effort, spearheaded by FC2, to develop cybersecurity as a critical component to drive economic development across the state of Florida.
