The FACES of DIVERSITY: Tackling Today's Global Challenges

USF continues to build a vibrant system focused on leveraging its talents in academics, research and community engagement. We are impacting our region in countless and significant ways through our commitment to student success, focus on global connections, research and innovation, and drive to lead as a major economic engine and partner for a sustainable future.

Now more than ever, we recognize that our strength resides in our differences and the opportunities that we create through the diversity and inclusion of every member of our community. Continuing to foster this culture will allow us to remain relevant and competitive in our global stage and tackle today's world challenges.

Join our USF and Tampa Bay communities for a conversation around these topics, best practices, who we are, what we are doing and what we have yet to do....as USF and our community continue to climb as a powerfully emerging influence on the future of our region, state and country.

The USF Diversity Summit is a system-wide event hosted by the President and attended by our faculty, staff and students. Each year, we explore diversity and inclusion topics that are important to both our internal and external communities through workshops, keynote speakers and other activities.

We invite your organization to join us as a sponsor during this important university system-wide event.

Diversity Summit Highlights

TAMPA, Fla. (March 23, 2012) – The University of South Florida's Diversity Summit serves a very important purpose. It captures the essence of a massive community undertaking.

What became increasingly evident during the March 20 day-long event was that diversity doesn't just happen by accident at USF and that the word itself embodies many layers of meaning and experience.

8th Annual USF Diversity Summit

Diversity Summit Highlights

TAMPA, Fla. (May 5, 2011) – What is a Diversity Summit, exactly? At the University of South Florida, for its eighth annual outing, Globalization & Diversity: It's a Changing World, it meant bringing together Tampa's new mayor, a leading corporate executive from CISCO, an expert on international protocol, some of Tampa's business leaders, the university's top leadership, faculty, staff and students to share information on the benefits and challenges of something that is more than a buzzword....

The USF Diversity Summit was initiated by the USF Diversity Network and supported by the Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity Office and the Office of the President. The program has evolved in three years and will continue to evolve as the best practices in Diversity and Inclusion expand and are integrated into the mission, vision, goals and values of the university.

Initially, the Diversity Summit provided an opportunity for the Presidential Advisory Committees and the diverse communities on campus to share their perspective with the executive leadership of the university around three themes: accomplishments, continuing concerns and recommendations. Since that initial program the Summit has expanded to include a wider audience and wider discussions about diversity. The Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity Office and USF's Diversity Network organize the event each year.

2009 Diversity Summit

On February 5th, 2009, USF and the Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity Office hosted the 6th Annual Diversity Summit which was attended by approximately 160 guests including faculty, staff and students. These are record numbers! The topics of Diversity and Mentoring, together, generated much interest among all.

The Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity Office and Diversity Network focused on mentoring and diversity to create opportunities for our panelists, presenters and guests to discuss and learn about how we are linking mentoring and diversity into all we do at USF; to learn about mentoring programs that are already making a difference in the lives of many in our community; and to explore and engage in conversations about where we go from here. Our key-note speaker, Dr. Stacy Blake-Beard, engaged our participants by seeking their input and soliciting their feedback through a faculty mentoring case scenario. Directors and administrators of various mentoring programs passionately described their programs and accomplishments. Several current students, USF Graduates, and members took this opportunity to share 'testimonials' about how various mentoring experiences here at USF helped them achieve their goals and dreams.

Diversity and Mentoring Presentation

This PowerPoint presentation captures the theme of this year's Diversity Summit "Mentoring and Diversity: Building a Community of Excellence" through its highlight of the various USF Mentoring Programs showcased during our summit. It also includes best practices and recommendations received from our participants during the summit.

Often our very best efforts are also our 'best kept secrets'... If your college, unit or department is contemplating establishing a mentoring program, I invite you to take a look at these mentoring programs to learn how they are making a difference everyday in the lives of our undergraduate and graduate students, staff and faculty.

The goal of the Annual Summit Diversity Report will be to summarize our summit each year and share its highlights with our USF community and beyond.
