PhD Qualifying Exam - Frequently Asked Questions


When can I take the exam?
The exam can be taken at any given time and date, as long as an appointment is made through the USF Testing Center and you have paid the $45 exam fee.

The USF Testing Center is located here:

3220 USF Banyan Circle (at the corner of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and E. Fletcher Ave.)

*** As long as the USF Testing Center is open, you will be able to book an appointment to take the exam. They are open on Saturdays! ***

How many questions will the exam be and how long do I have to take the exam?
You will be given two hours to complete a 30 multiple choice exam. Each question will have four possible answers and only one answer will be correct.

How many times can I take the exam?
For each 2-hour sitting you pay, you can ONLY take the exam ONCE. If you do not pass the exam on this attempt, you will have to retake the exam another day.

Will I know my score right away?
Yes. The exam will be graded as soon as it is submitted.

How will I know if I passed?
In order for you to successfully pass the PhD Qualifying Exam you will have to score an 80% or answer at least 24 questions correctly.

What happens if I do not pass the exam?
If you do not pass the exam, you will have to retake the exam. However, you cannot retake the exam immediately after. You will have to allow 5 business days to pass prior to you scheduling another appointment.

Do I have to pay again if I have to retake the exam?
Yes. Each two hour sitting is $45.
