The federal definition of an independent
student for financial aid purposes, is someone who
meets one of the following for academic year 2006-2007:
- You were born before 1/1/83 or;
- At the beginning of the 2006-2007 school
year you will be working on a
Master’s or Doctorate degree, or;
- As of the date the application is filed
you are married, or;
- You have children who receive more than half
of their support from you, or;
- You have dependents other than your children
or spouse, who live with you and who receive more than half of their
support from you now and through June 30, 2007, or;
- (a)Both parents are deceased, or (b)you are, or were until age
18, a ward/dependent of the court,
or;
- You are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for
purposes other than training, or;
- You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed
Forces.
If you do not meet one of the specific
conditions listed above, but have a permanently broken relationship with
your parents, due to extenuating circumstances beyond your control, you may
meet with a financial aid counselor to determine whether you qualify to file
an Extenuating Circumstances Petition to apply for aid as an independent
student for 2006-2007.
