Cuban Studies


The Latin American and Caribbean Studies program, in collaboration with the World Language Education department, offers this certificate in order to prepare students for work, travel and professional development in Cuba. Participants in this certificate are eligible to travel to Cuba for a study-abroad credit course.

Course location/delivery

The Certificate is available at the Tampa Campus.

Admission requirements

Students must already hold an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

A total of twelve (12) hours are required to complete the certificate. Select four courses from the following list:

SPW 5525 Modern Spanish American Civilization(3 credits)
WST 5934 Women in Latin America/Cuba (3 credits)
ART 6940 Selected Topics in Art: Survey of Cuban Art (3 credits)
SPW 5934 Selected Topics: Dialectology/Cuba & Caribbean (3 credits)
SPW 6775 Caribbean/Cuban Literature (3 credits)
HIS 6925 Colloquium in History: History of Cuba (3 credits)
REL 6938 Religions of Cuba (3 credits)
INR 6007 Seminar in International Relations: Cuba (3 credits)
HUM 6456 American Arts and Letters II: Modern Cuba (3 credits)

Time limit

Certificate must be completed within five years.

Credit toward graduate degree

Up to 12 hours of certificate course credits may be applied to a graduate degree with departmental approval

Standardized tests

International students must submit a TOEFL score when English is not the native language. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 79 on the web-based test is required.
