Geriatric Social Work/Clinical Gerontology

Description

Completion of this Certificate will augment clinical and team skills applied to working with older adults. The diverse curriculum enhances the knowledge of practicing, graduate-level, social workers; nurses; physical therapists; occupational therapists, or other health/mental health professionals. Moreover, the Certificate is designed to supplement the clinical knowledge of those already in graduate education and who desire specialization in this particular area.

Course location/delivery

The certificate is currently offered at the Tampa campus; however, plans are underway for availability through distance learning.

Admission requirements

Student must possess a graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution in Gerontology, Psychology, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Speech and Hearing, Physical Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Nursing, Social Work or a related clinical or applied field, or active enrollment/admission to a graduate program in one of these areas.

15 credit hours.

GEY 6326 - Geriatric Interdisciplinary Teams (3)
GEY 6614 - Aging and Mental Disorders (3)
GEY 6616 - Mental Health Assessment of Older Adults (3)

Electives

Choose two from the following:

GEY 6617 - Gerontological Counseling Theories & Practice (3)
GEY 6321 - Gerontological Case Management (3)
GEY 6607 - Alzheimer's Disease Management (3)

 

Credit toward graduate degree

Courses may be applied as Electives in either Social Work or Gerontology. Also, they may be deemed electives in other graduate programs upon approval of degree granting department.

Standardized tests

International students must submit a TOEFL score when English is not the native language. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 79 on the web-based test is required.
