The goal of the Graduate Certificate in Metabolic Cardiology is to provide medical professionals with a comprehensive review of cardiology, the biological basis of cardiovascular structure and function and diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The certificate courses focus on discussions of topics that include vascular biology and disease, endothelial dysfunction, the roles of inflammation and oxidative stress, hypertension, causes of vascular aging, noninvasive and invasive testing, early detection and treatment with nutrition and nutraceutical supplements, dyslipidemia, the analysis of cardiovascular risk factors, mediators and cardiovascular risk scoring, early identification of cardiovascular issues and the properties various treatment plans.
This certificate offers the opportunity for medical professionals involved in healthcare delivery to begin transition to understand the broad spectrum of issues involved in cardiovascular disease. For students that are involved in clinical care, this certificate provides the necessary coursework to successfully understand the multi-factorial causes of cardiovascular disease and its treatment.
Credit toward graduate degree
Up to 12 hours of certificate course credits may be applied to a graduate degree with departmental approval.
GRE and MCAT scores can be used to demonstrate qualitative and quantitative skills, but are not required for admission into the certificate program.
International students must submit a TOEFL score when English is not the native language. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 79 on the web-based test is required. MCAT or GRE or equivalent optional.
Applicants must have an advanced degree in the biomedical sciences from a regionally accredited institution.
