Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or Foreign Language

Description

This is a Professional Certificate in TESL. The program described below is designed only for persons who already hold, or are simultaneously pursuing, an advanced degree in another field such as English, Foreign Languages, Education, etc. (The TESL Certificate should not be confused with the Florida Public School Certification).

Course location/delivery

The Certificate is offered at the Tampa campus.

Admission requirements

Applicant must hold (or be currently seeking) an earned Master's or Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution.

None are required.

Requirements

Students who already hold an M.A. and/or PH.D. degree from an accredited IHE will be admitted upon submission of transcripts through normal process.

Twenty-one credit hours are required consisting of the following:

LIN 6720 Second Language Acquisition (3 credits)
TSL 5371 Methods of Teaching English/ Second Language (3 credits)
TSL 5372 ESOL Curriculum and Instruction (3 credits)
TSL 5471 Language Testing (3 credits)
TSL 5525 Cross-Cultural Issues ESL (3 credits)
TSL 6945 Internship (3 credits)
LIN 5700 Applied Linguistics (3 credits)

Electives

None are required.

Time limit

Student must complete Certificate within three years.

Credit toward graduate degree

Up to 12 hours of certificate course credits may be applied to a graduate degree with departmental approval

Standardized tests

International students must complete the TOEFEL 600 and TSE 55 before the department will consider admission. Students who are currently enrolled in another USF graduate program need not meet any additional admission
