NIH Loan Repayment Programs
The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) encourage promising researchers and scientists
to pursue research careers by repaying up to $35,000 of their qualified student loan
debt each year, through Extramural LRP's (for researchers and scientists conducting
research at universities and other nonprofit organizations) and Intramural LRP's (for
NIH employee researchers). There is also a separate Student Loan Repayment Program
available to certain NIH employees who are not research scientists. To be eligible
to participate in the programs, the postdoctoral scholar's research goals need to
be within the mission of the NIH and scope of the LRP's. The postdoctoral scholar
does not need an NIH grant to participate in the NIH Loan Repayment Programs. More
