Our center provides high-quality training experiences to developing clinicians from multiple disciplines including psychology, counseling, and social work. The three training programs incorporate the traditional hallmarks of evidenced based collegiate mental health (individual therapy, group counseling, outreach, consultation, and supervision), a commitment to social justice embedded throughout, and innovative efforts utilizing technology resources and coordinated treatment with other healthcare providers and campus partners to provide exceptional care for our students and their whole well-being.
I am proud to let you know that the USF Counseling Center is fully accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services. Our first training program, the doctoral internship, has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association for over 30 years and we are an active member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers. Over the years we have added an exceptional post-doctoral fellowship program and provide individualized clinical training for graduate students from multiple disciplines in mental health.
Each training program has its own focus and structure, so I invite you to take a look at your program of interest for in-depth information. However, a number of qualities are at the heart of everything we do. As a trainee at the USF Counseling Center you can expect to have a comprehensive training experience, receive excellent supervision, enhance your multicultural and social justice competencies, and benefit from a multidisciplinary training environment.
As a trainee here, you would have a comprehensive mix of training experiences such as supervised clinical work, didactic seminars and professional development, individual and group supervision from multiple supervisors, and opportunities to be involved in outreach and consultation. As valued members of the counseling center, trainees are integrated into clinical teams and attend general staff meetings, depending on individual schedule requirements. This provides you opportunities for informal clinical consultation similar to independent practice and to learn about organizational aspects of counseling center operation.
I believe that supervision is at the core of clinical training and want each of our trainees to have access to excellent supervision. Our supervisors are all trained in competency-based supervision and engage in regular supervision of supervision to enhance the quality of supervision we provide. Trainees play an invaluable role in our goal of continual improvement by evaluating supervisors based on supervision competencies. Also, we recognize that the diversity of our supervisors (theoretical orientation, professional experiences, areas of expertise, and cultural backgrounds) immensely enriches a trainee's supervision experience, and we seek to hire and support qualified clinicians who can add their unique contributions to our team.
Our center is committed to enhancing the development of multicultural and social justice competencies for our staff and trainees. This is accomplished by providing clinical services to our extremely diverse student body (in terms of socioeconomic status, gender, religion, students of color, international students, LGBTQ+ students, etc.) and recognizing the diversity within our staff. All clinicians are required to attend specific trainings for the university (e.g. Safe Zone, Got Your 6, Title IX) as well as attend professional development opportunities focused on multicultural issues and social justice. A large portion of our outreach is designed for traditionally under-served populations and attention to multicultural considerations and social justice is a foundational part of our supervision, seminars, and clinical team discussions.
Our multidisciplinary training environment will help to prepare you to work with a wide range of service providers, which is needed for wherever the next step of your professional journey takes you. Our training staff is comprised of clinical social workers, psychologists, and mental health counselors. The center also provides opportunities for inter-professional collaboration with other healthcare providers and professional staff through consultations with campus partners to ensure coordinated care planning for clients. A few examples of frequent collaborators include the medical and psychiatry providers at Student Health Services, the case managers at Student Outreach Services, and the disability specialists at Students with Disability Services.
I also want to share about the unique opportunities we offer for doctoral interns and postdocs in psychology to engage in career exploration as they cement their professional identities. During May through July, these trainees are able to do an external rotation at affiliated training agencies in healthcare and other settings to expand their skill set and more widely market themselves. 100% of trainees who graduate from our programs have secured employment or post-doctoral fellowships. The multiple environments they work at include university counseling centers, federal prisons, hospitals, private and group practices, primary care settings, VAs, academic settings, and non-profits.
