Commencement

Student Information

Regalia (Cap & Gown)

Requirements

Regalia (a cap & gown) is required to participate in commencement. Regalia is different for Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral candidates. Military uniforms may be worn in lieu of regalia.

Several companies may try to sell caps and gowns. To be certain that you are getting the USF-approved regalia, please order from the USF Bookstore.

Advance ordering of regalia for bachelor and master recipients is available online and during Grad Stampede. Regalia will be on sale at the USF Bookstore beginning the week before finals.

Doctoral regalia orders are taken in advance earlier in the semester, either 6 weeks prior to the ceremony for purchased regalia or 4 weeks prior to the ceremony for rental regalia. Payment is made at the time of purchase.

Out-of-town students should contact the Bookstore to make regalia arrangements. Please call Bookstore Customer Service at (813) 974-2067 for all regalia inquiries.

Pricing

Doctoral regalia for purchase needs to be ordered 6 weeks prior to the ceremony. Doctoral regalia for rental needs to be placed 4 weeks prior to the ceremony.

Doctoral tams are not available for rent due to health considerations. Doctoral students can replace a tam with a mortarboard, but it is not recommended.

Honor Society Sashes

Undergraduate students who are members of official registered honor societies may opt to purchase and wear an honor sash. Each sash is custom made for each bearer. This distinction is not for all students who may be graduating with honors, but only for those who are members of honor societies.

To order honor sashes, call the USF Bookstore at (813) 974-2067.

Honor Medallion

Graduates may purchase an honor medallion if their name is on the official "graduating with honors" list posted at the USF Bookstore. Only Bachelor candidates wear honor medallions. Medallions will be on sale at the USF Bookstore at the same time as regalia.

International Sashes

International sashes are available for those graduates whose home country is outside the continental United States and are registered with USF International Student Services. The sashes bear the same colors as the flag of each nation. Sashes are available from the International Student & Scholars Services Office.

International students can request a sash when RSVPing for Commencement. Sashes may be picked up in the Patel Center, CGS101 two days prior to the Commencement ceremony. For more information, call (813) 974-5495.

Bachelor's Information

The USF Commencement ceremony is a most dignified event and quite a bit different than what you may have experienced in high school.

For the ceremony, you will arrive at the USF Sun Dome Corral. The entrance to the Corral is to the left of Gate A. Here you will locate your College and get your ceremony reader card. You will then proceed downstairs to the arena floor to be seated with the other students from your college. Faculty Marshals will help you on the arena floor.

Because seating is first come, first seated, we advise that you arrive when the doors open. For all ceremonies, doors open 90 minutes prior to the ceremony time. We do not seat graduates alphabetically so you are able to sit with friends in your college.

*You must RSVP to attend Commencement in advance. There is no fee to attend, other than the cost of regalia.
*Be sure you order your regalia from the USF Bookstore.

Volunteers from the USF Alumni Association will be on hand in the Corral the day of the ceremony to assist you in putting your regalia on properly.

Your name will only be in ceremony program if you apply to graduate before the semester deadline which is published on the USF Registrar’s website

The USF Commencement ceremonies will be live streamed via a webcast on our website for guests who are unable to attend Commencement in person.

Please make sure to visit our FAQ page and don’t hesitate to contact our office with any questions: commencement@usf.edu.

Master's Information

Master’s candidates are easy to identify at the ceremony as they wear their ceremonial hood. The hoods have USF green and gold and are edged and bound with the velvet color appropriate for the degree being awarded. For Tampa ceremonies, Masters students arrive on the arena floor wearing their hoods.

For check-in, please arrive at the USF Sun Dome Corral. The entrance to the Corral is to the left of Gate A. Here you will receive your ceremony reader card. Then you will proceed downstairs to the arena floor to be seated with other students from your college. Faculty Marshals will help you on the arena floor.

*Master’s candidates need to RSVP if they wish to attend Commencement. There is no fee to attend other than the cost of regalia.
*For Master’s regalia, only the hood is worn with the robe- no medallions, sashes or cords that you may have earned as an undergraduate are not worn on a Master’s robe.

Volunteers from the USF Alumni Association will be on hand in the Corral the day of the ceremony to assist you in putting your hood on properly.

Doctoral Information

Participating in Commencement will be the easiest step in your doctoral process.

For Tampa campus ceremonies, only Doctoral students are hooded. For other USF campus ceremonies, Masters students are also hooded.

Students that will be hooded will carry their hood with them into the ceremony. For the hooding, the student faces the audience as the professor places the academic hood of their head to their shoulders.

The process is not complicated, but your attention is requested to insure that the hooding proceeds gracefully and professionally. Please view a sample of hooding

Your name will only be in ceremony program if you apply to graduate before the published deadline.

The USF Commencement ceremonies will be live streamed via a webcast on our website for guests who are unable to attend Commencement in person.
