MOBILE COMPUTING STATEMENT OF SUPPORT

Purpose:  Information Technologies (IT) recognizes the need for personal tools to manage workload or perform certain tasks that may require a mobile computing device.  This policy is intended to provide guidance to departments who are utilizing and/or considering utilizing the use of these devices in their daily work.

 

Supported Mobile Computing Devices:  The Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and Mobile Computing Devices (MCDs) below are supported by IT.  Note:  IT highly recommends devices that utilize the Microsoft Windows Mobile* platform.

Selection & Purchase:  IT will provide guidance in the selection of a mobile device to meet user’s needs free of charge.  Purchase and repair costs of the device will be the responsibility of the user. 


Security Controls:  The use of mobile computing devices is not considered a secure environment for all applications.  It is recommended that only non-confidential information be stored on the device and that password protection features are enabled.

 

Support Controls: 

a.       Mobile computing devices (MCDs) must meet IT standards in order to receive full support (see Supported Mobile Devices above). 

b.       IT will provide the following technical assistance for supported mobile computing devices for IT SuperServer and Exchange users.  Other units should contact their local computing support staff for assistance.

·         Mobile connectivity to information in Exchange accounts housed on IT servers

·         Installation of the USF root certificate for use in accessing certain USF network resources

·         Installation and configuration of synchronization software for the PDA or MCD

·         Installation and configuration of desktop applications used to allow the functionality noted above to operate correctly

c.       Functions not explicitly defined above are not supported by Information Technologies.
