Using PowerPoint presentations in Blackboard without saving them as HTML

Click here for a print-friendly version of this document.

Instead of saving your PowerPoint presentations as HTML, you can also use original PowerPoint presentations. Some notes about PowerPoint presentations that are not saved at HTML:

  • Students need to have PowerPoint or the PowerPoint Viewer to view the presentation
  • When using plain PowerPoint presentations, students are essentially downloading the entire presentation to their harddrive.
    • Be aware that allowing students to download your presentation means that they have full access to that presentation. If you added presenter notes to individual slides, those will also be available to students. Since they download the file to their harddrive, they can keep and edit that presentation for their own use.
  • The downloading process will differ depending on which browser students are using.
  • If you do NOT want to give up the entire presentation file, but you do want your students to have access to a printable version of your presentation you should consider creating a PDF file of the handouts view. But be aware that you need an additional program (for example Adobe Acrobat) to do so.
In the following examples, you will attach a Microsoft Word file to a Blackboard document. Let's use your syllabus again, so that you can see all the different options you have to add your syllabus to your course.
  • Click the Control Panel button.
  • From the Content Areas section, choose Course Material.
  • Click on the folder where you would the presentation to reside.
  • Click Add Item.
  • In the Name field, select "Other -- Add Text Below."
  • In the or specify your own name field, type the document title: <Presentation as .PPT file<The content will be in the attached file, but you may still want to use the Text field to enter a brief description of the file you are attaching. Type the following in the Text field:
This is a PowerPoint presentation. You need to have PowerPoint or PowerPoint Viewer installed on your machine in order to read it.
  • In the Item Attachments area, click the Browse button and locate the PowerPoint file
  • In the Name of Link to File area, type Presentation (PowerPoint document).
  • The Name of Link to File becomes the linked text that the user clicks on to open the file.
  • Leave the Special Action set to the default "Create a link to this file." Leave the options in the Options area set to their defaults.
  • Click Submit. A receipt will indicate the successful submission.
  • Return to the Student View of the course by clicking the CourseID in the navigation path in the upper left corner of your course.
  • Click on the Course Material button in the navigation menu of the Student View.
  • Within the appropriate folder, click on the link to view the presentation. The word processing program will launch and open the file on your computer.
Note:

Depending on the combination of browser and word processor you are using, the file may launch differently.

Netscape browsers will typically ask whether you want to Open or Save a Microsoft Word document (select Open), and open the document in a separate Microsoft Word window, leaving a greyed-out pane in Blackboard.

Microsoft Internet Explorer will open a Microsoft Word document within the browser itself instead of launching Word separately. Various combinations of browsers and applications can affect how a document will be launched.

  • Close the document if it opened in a separate window
