Internships and Awards

Are you interested in gaining on-the-job work experience while earning credits towards your degree? Then an internship is for you!

Where can I complete an internship?

Our intent is to offer you an internship experience that you will find exciting and rewarding, but in which you also feel well-supported by the department. To that end, we have worked to establish relationships between the department and various community organizations in our area:

Public History, Museums, and Communications Track:

Instructor: Dr. Jennifer Knight, jlknight@usf.edu

Opportunities with an external application process (We will support the following internships with academic credit pending acceptance through their own application process):

We are always looking to establish new relationships and will add to this list of potential internship experiences all the time. Also, if you already have another potential internship in mind, please feel free to let us know and we’ll look into making arrangements.

Library and Archives Track:

Instructor: Matthew Knight, mtknight@usf.edu

Digital History and Visualization Track:

Instructor: Dr. Davide Tanasi, dtanasi@usf.edu

We are always looking to establish new relationships and will add to this list of potential internship experiences all the time. Also, if you already have another potential internship in mind, please feel free to let us know and we’ll look into making arrangements.

How Do I Apply For an Internship?

The first step is to contact the Internship Coordinator, Dr. Jennifer Knight, or the History Department’s Undergraduate Advisor, James Lambert, to express your interest in completing an internship.  We will be happy to help you to identify the best opportunity to meet your interests and career goals.

The standard application process for each of these internship opportunities is to submit your CV or resume, as well as a 1-2 page letter of application directed at your selected opportunity. Once you have selected the opportunity that you wish to apply to, you should forward your application materials to Dr. Jennifer Knight, who will contact the internship provider. Once they have reviewed your application, you will be notified of their decision. For those opportunities listed as "external application process", please consult with Dr. Knight and then follow the institution's guidelines for application.

How Do I Enroll In Credits For My Internship?

Academic credit for your internship will be awarded via your enrollment in the 3 credit hour course HIS 4940 “History Internship”. A permit is required to register, so start by contacting the Internship Coordinator, Dr. Jennifer Knight, or the History Department’s Undergraduate Advisor, James Lambert, to express your interest. This course will entail weekly group meetings approx. 2 hours in length (see USF course schedule for details), the maintenance of a weekly written journal of your internship experience, a final project, and a minimum of 6 hours per week on-site at your selected internship experience. Students who are not History majors can participate in this course and internship program as well; contact Dr. Knight for further details.

Internships are also open to graduate students in the Department of History's M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Please make an appointment with Dr. Knight to discuss futher details.
