How To Apply

Admission Process

Applicants must submit a graduate application through the Office of Admissions and pay a $30 non-refundable application fee. Prospective candidates must submit the USF online graduate application before the stated deadline for the semester in which you wish to enter the program. Please upload all application materials to your graduate application as .pdf format.

Admissions Requirements

General Admissions

Regular admission to the LIS program will be granted to students who meet one of the following criteria:

Undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or above in upper-division coursework from a regionally-accredited institution OR
Graduate GPA of 3.5 or above in a master's degree program from a regionally-accredited institution OR
Doctoral degree (including professional degrees such as the JD and MD) from a regionally-accredited institution.

Students who meet one of the above criteria are not required to complete the GRE.

Students not meeting one of the above criteria must submit additional items to be considered for conditional admission. See Conditional Admissions.

Conditional Admissions

Conditional admissions are for applicants who may not meet the general admissions

  • GRE – 156 Verbal, 141 Quantitative - GRE must have been completed within the last 5 years of application submission
  • Academic Writing Sample
  • Statement of Purpose
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Resume – Not required but it does help in the application review process to determine relevant work history

Conditional admission status will be converted to regular status upon completion of the first three LIS courses with a GPA of 3.5 or above. LIS 5020 must be included as one of the three courses.

International Applicants

While the Master of Arts in Library and Information Science is a fully online degree we do offer admissions to applicants who earned a degree equivalent to a U.S. regionally accredited bachelors. International applicants or applicants who attended school outside of the United States are required to meet all admissions requirements as outlined on the USF Admissions website.

 

 International Applicant Requirements

International applicants must submit transcripts to Graduate Admissions that include both a language and GPA translation. The School of Information will request international applicants submit the following items for consideration.

  • GRE – 156 Verbal, 141 Quantitative - GRE must have been completed within the last 5 years of application submission.
