Peter Nikolaus Funke received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and his “Vordiplom” from the Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on social movements & contentions politics, capitalism & class, media & technology. Peter has published in various peer reviewed journals such as Globalizations, New Media & Society, Rethinking Marxism, New Political Science, Social Movement Studies, or Transforming Anthropology. He is the co-editor of “The Great Refusal: Herbert Marcuse and Contemporary Social Movements” (Temple University Press 2017) and “The New Global Politics: Global Social Movements in the 21st Century” (Routledge 2017). Peter’s research has been funded by the University of South Florida, the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence at Florida International University, the Social Science Research Council, the International Studies Association, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Currently, Peter is working on a book length study ("The Current Epoch of Contention: Social Movement Politics under Global Capitalism"), as well as on several articles and chapters on contemporary social movement based politics, class formation and the role of (new) media in neoliberal capitalism.
At the University of South Florida, Peter teaches courses on Marxism, Political Economy, Social Movements, Politics of Developing Areas and European Politics. He was the department’s Experiential Learning/Internship Opportunities Coordinator for the Political Science Internship Program until 2018 and teaches in the Honors College's program "Germany Beyond the Classroom." Peter is the founding coordinator of the USF Social Movement Study Group.
