Awards & Scholarships

The Department of Sociology and the University of South Florida offer a variety of award and scholarship opportunities to our undergraduates. Currently, the Department of Sociology offers the following:

Outstanding Senior Awards in Sociology & ISS

The Department of Sociology recognizes the achievements of our outstanding undergraduate students -- both in Sociology and ISS -- through the Outstanding Senior Awards. Given annually, these awards recognize students in their last year of undergraduate studies who have distinguished themselves by their academic achievements, leadership, and community service.

Richard J. Wallace Scholarships for Undergraduate Sociology Majors

Through our Richard J. Wallace Undergraduate Student Scholarship Fund, the Department of Sociology provides scholarships to as many as five undergraduate Sociology majors per year, assisting them with tuition and the purchase of books. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  1. have declared Sociology as their major;
  2. be of Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class standing and completed a minimum of 36 credit hours of undergraduate study and at least 6 credit hours of Sociology coursework at the 3000-level or higher;
  3. be a full- or part-time student who will NOT graduate in the current semester, and who has not received the scholarship before;
  4. have a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.00, with preference given to those with a Sociology major grade point average of 3.25 or higher;
  5. have demonstrated need for financial assistance based on the student's FAFSA report.

Dixon's Posimoto Scholarship to Provide Internship Support for Undergraduate Sociology and ISS Majors

Through our Dixon's Posimoto Scholarship Fund, the Department of Sociology provides one scholarship annually to an undergraduate student on the Tampa campus who would like to complete an unpaid internship in the spring semester with a local, non-profit community agency, and who would otherwise find it difficult financially to complete the internship. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  1. have declared Sociology or ISS as their major;
  2. be of Junior or Senior class standing, and who has not received the scholarship before;
  3. be a first-generation-in-college student (i.e., neither parent graduated from college);
  4. have a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.25;
  5. have demonstrated need for financial assistance based on the student's FAFSA report.
  6. have identified a local, non-profit community agency which is willing to host the internship;
  7. meet the eligibility criteria to enroll in one of the department's internship courses -- SYA 4949 or ISS 4940;
  8. submit two letters of recommendation from USF faculty and either a 3,000 word essay or a 3-5 minute video introducing themselves, their career goals, and the internship they will be pursuing.

Announcements about how and when to apply for these awards and scholarships will be posted on Canvas and distributed by email every fall (for the Richard J. Wallace and Dixon's Posimoto Scholarships) and every spring (for the Outstanding Senior Awards). Please contact the Undergraduate Program Director for more details.
