Baldwin Risk Partners School of Risk Management and Insurance

Program Director

Steve Miller, an internationally known risk management and insurance educator, joined the University of South Florida faculty in the summer of 2019 to lead its expanding risk management and insurance program.

Miller serves as an associate professor in the Baldwin Risk Partners School of Risk Management and Insurance at USF's Muma College of Business. The risk management and insurance program at USF is hosted at the Sarasota-Manatee campus, where a minor in risk management and insurance was created in 2015 before the program added a bachelor's degree in 2017.

Prior to joining USF, Miller played an instrumental role during the past decade in developing and leading one of top risk management and insurance programs in the nation at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

Miller taught undergraduate and graduate courses in corporate risk management and related topics and served as a visiting instructor at Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing, China, for three summers through a project designed to share educational best practices and support a cultural exchange in risk management and insurance teaching and research.

Prior to his academic career, Miller served as a consultant based in Chicago, New York and London, helping corporate risk managers leverage data and systems to meet risk management objectives.  He managed teams to implement large-scale consulting engagements and business development projects in Asia, Central America and South America.

Miller’s research focuses on enterprise risk management and corporate governance and has been widely published in a variety of academic journals, including the Journal of Risk and Insurance; the Journal of Banking and Finance; the Journal of Corporate Finance; the Journal of Insurance Regulation and the Journal of Insurance Issues.

His academic achievements have been recognized by national organizations, including the American Risk and Insurance Association, which presented him with the 2019 Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award.

A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Miller earned a PhD in risk management and insurance from the University of Georgia and bachelor’s degrees in risk management and insurance and finance, investment and banking, from the University of Wisconsin. His wife, Tina Yang, is an associate professor in the finance department at the USF St. Petersburg campus.
