Spring 2020 Commencement Postponement

april 7 update

Dear Spring 2020 Graduates,

Commencement is one of the most important milestones of our students’ and their families’ lives—a celebration of the conclusion of your academic career and a recognition of your many personal achievements as a student.

Although traditional on-campus Commencement ceremonies won’t be held this May, we have worked diligently to provide alternatives that will give our graduates the recognition they so deserve.

First, Summer Commencement ceremonies held in August will be expanded to allow all spring graduates the opportunity to participate. Summer Commencement dates are tentatively planned for Thursday, August 6 through Sunday, August 9. Final ceremony times and college ceremony assignments will be announced soon, depending on participation rates. To help us adequately plan, we ask that all spring graduates who are interested in attending our August ceremonies complete this survey.

In addition to opening our August ceremonies, a Virtual Commencement will be hosted for each of our three campuses, featuring recognition of our Outstanding Graduate Award winners and King O’Neal 4.0 GPA Scholars, remarks from each USF Campus Student Body President, and the conferring of degrees by Steven C. Currall, President of the University. These ceremonies will be viewable during the weekend of Commencement on Saturday, May 9 and will include the names of each individual graduate on the screen. We also are exploring various ways for our graduates to interact with us from afar, via social media. More information on this campaign is coming soon.

Finally, each spring graduate can request a hard copy of the Spring Commencement program. Requests for programs may be made here and will be mailed during the coming weeks.

As always, the health and wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff remain our top priority. We will continue to update our spring graduates as plans progress. Our Commencement plans are contingent upon guidance we receive from federal, state, and local government and public health officials.

Thank you and Go Bulls!

March 17 Update from President Steve Currall

Commencement is a vital element of our university community and an important milestone in the lives of our students and their families. Per Board of Governors direction, the spring 2020 commencement scheduled for May is postponed until further notice. We understand this is very disappointing to our graduates and their families.

This is not a decision we take lightly, and we are working diligently with student leaders to develop creative alternative solutions to give our graduates the recognition they have rightly earned, including the possibility of expanding August ceremonies to include spring graduates. More details will be provided as soon as possible.
