A Conversation with Barry Carpenter

About Barry Carpenter: 

Professor Carpenter is Professor of Mental Health in Education, at Oxford Brookes University. Throughout his 40-year career, he has held leadership positions as Head Teacher, Principal, Academic Director, Chief Executive, Inspector of Schools and Director of the Centre for Special Education at Westminster College, Oxford.

In 2009, Carpenter was appointed by the Secretary of State for Education as Director of the Children with Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Research Project and remains the Expert Adviser to the Department for Education. He has served on many national committees including The Standing Commission on Carers, the Mental Health Foundation, and the National Inquiry into the Mental Health of Young People with Learning Disabilities. He is the Chair for the National Forum, looking at the needs of Girls on the Autism Spectrum.

Carpenter is the author of more than 150 articles and many texts on a range of learning disability and special needs topics. He was appointed as Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by
Queen Elizabeth II for his services to children with Special Needs. In 2017 he was entered into “Who’s Who” in acknowledgment of his national and international contribution to the field of Special Education.
