Debate Team

Who We Are:
The University of South Florida Debate Team is comprised of undergraduate students in all majors and areas of study. Team composition includes students with extensive debate experience and those who are just beginning; there is a place for everyone!

As a new program, we are actively looking for prospective debaters who are interested in learning, developing critical thinking, taking charge of their own education, personal and political discovery, and looking for fun!

Why Debate:
In competitive academic debate, students will learn advanced argumentation strategies that develop critical thinking more than any other speaking activity. Due to the nature of a year-long topic, debaters will learn the in-depth research skills needed for classes and hone skillsets that are attractive to graduate and law schools.

What We Do:
The written and spoken format of debate allows students to develop skills and knowledge, but also take charge of their own learning. Topical research organically includes discourses on contemporary issues of identity relevant to race, class, ability, gender, sexuality, and the intersections among those concepts.

The University of South Florida Debate Team participates in intercollegiate policy debate. We debate the year-long topic voted on by member schools of the Cross Examination Debate Association. For the 2021-22 academic year, the topic is as follows: Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase prohibitions on anticompetitive business practices by the private sector by at least expanding the scope of its core antitrust laws.

We compete at tournaments sanctioned by three national debate organizations: the American Debate Association, the Cross Examination Debate Association, and the National Debate Tournament.

Where We Go:
Debate tournaments travel around the country competing against teams from Harvard, Dartmouth, Cornell, Emory, UC-Berkeley, the US Military Academy, and Wake Forest to name just a few.

We visit big cities and beautiful campuses, and make connections with students and faculty at universities around the country.
