Trace metal biogeochemistry

Project Goal: Assess seasonal and interannual variability of trace metals on the West Florida Shelf, and evaluate the role of trace metals in local Karenia brevis blooms.

Current Activities: Routine field surveys of dissolved (<0.2 µm) and dissolvable (unfiltered, acidified) Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd, Zn, Pb (and eventually Al) in surface waters; nitrate+nitrite, nitrite, phosphate, silicic acid.


Microbiology, genomics

Project Goal: Identification of viruses associated with Karenia brevis blooms.

Current Activities: Collection of field K. brevis samples for viral metagenomics, mining of publicly available Karenia transcriptomes for viral genes.

 


Glider operations

Project Goal: Using Autonomous underwater vehicles (gliders) to collect physical ocean measurements to assist researchers in understanding and predicting the formulation and evolution of K. brevis blooms.

Current Activities: Continuing glider deployments, with additional collection of echosounder and nitrate sensor data.

 


Satellite remote sensing

Project Goal: Tracking of K. brevis blooms using remote sensing and water sample analysis to assess patterns over varying time scales.

Current Activities: Exploring ways to download 10-60 m resolution MSI data (ESA) in near-real time - Generating preliminary dataset to integrate cell counts and satellite imagery - Developing a machine learning algorithm to derive cell counts from satellite data.


Ocean circulation observing & modeling, red tide prediction

Project Goal: Maintain/improve coastal ocean observing systems and numerical models, with applications to K. brevis understanding and forecasting, both seasonal and short-term. 

Current Activities: Continuing observations, with preparation for nutrient sensor addition, examining the 2018 bloom termination, improving the short-term forecast product, improving WFCOM & TBCOM & adding a biological module.
