2017 USF graduate and Provost Scholar
2017 Fulbright US Student Program Study Grant to the United Kingdom
Dalia Elmelige is a 2017 graduate of USF and Provost's Scholar. She is a proud recipient of the 2017 Fulbright US Student Program study grant to the United Kingdom, and her undergraduate resume is far from ordinary. While discussing her accomplishments, Dalia smiled as she recalled her study abroad experience in Copenhagen, Denmark.
"I coordinated a team of students for the production of a local youth festival in Copenhagen, with the objective of helping refugees in the area," she says. "I wanted to help them understand that they had American friends who wanted to help them become global citizens." Dalia fondly recalls the work she did with the youth festival participants. "I felt a connection to the people, and loved hearing their stories. It strengthened my passion for helping refugees."
In the time since the youth festival was coordinated in Denmark, Dalia became the coordinator for upcoming events to benefit local refugees. Her desire to help displaced and underserved populations strengthened when she was offered the opportunity to translate terrorism videos from Arabic to English as an intern with the Carter Center. "It was so graphic and violent to watch. I knew I needed to make a difference in the world, and decided to become a Public Diplomacy Foreign Services Officer," says Dalia.
After graduation, Dalia will travel to the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom to begin her Development and Security graduate program. She plans to continue her research to serve refugees throughout her career.
