2017 Fulbright US Student Program English Teaching Assistantship to Colombia

Anne Shaughnessy, originally from Tampa, FL, is a proud recipient of the 2017 Fulbright US Student Program English Teaching Assistantship to Colombia. This award paved the way for Anne to teach English at the National University in Bogotá, Colombia. She runs an intense English course and teaches her students four times per week.

Anne feels that her USF education prepared her for this teaching experience. "I feel mentally prepared to teach English after completing my Master in Linguistics from the World Languages department at USF," she says. "I also worked at the INTO USF Tutoring Center for 2 years and spent a lot of time speaking with people from all over the world - having those experiences gave me more confidence to speak with people in Colombia."

She attributes her success to her background. "The majority of my family are Colombian immigrants and it's easier to understand customs, attitudes, and also the language," says Anne.

Winning this award allowed her to explore her love of teaching and learn a new language. "Learning a second language while teaching has been very fun and definitely a workout for my brain," she says. "A bilingual brain can be more flexible and creative."

In the future, she plans to continue teaching and apply to USF's PhD Education program in 2018.

Congratulations to Anne on winning the 2017 Fulbright US Student Program English Teaching Assistantship to Colombia!
