Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Fall 2017) - Study Abroad in South Korea

Kimberly Haylock, originally from Apopka, FL, is a proud recipient of the Fall 2017 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This award provided her with the opportunity to study abroad in South Korea at Hallym University. She resides in an international dorm with two Koreans, who assist her to improve her Korean language skills.

Kimberly also serves as an English tutor for some of her peers who live in the dorm. She is the only exchange student from the US, and says she is able to help her Korean classmates better understand American culture and dispel common stereotypes.

During the application process, she worked closely with ONS. "I had a lot of help from the ONS office, specifically Robert Annis, who was patient with me and guided me through seven drafts which helped me to be awarded. It was a lot of hard work on both ends to help make this dream a reality," says Kimberly.

She attributes her success to long nights of really thinking about why she wants to go to South Korea, who she is, and why she should be awarded this scholarship.

Kimberly feels her future plans may change after being in Korea. "When people say that study abroad programs change the way you think and see the world is very true," she says. "Before I left for South Korea, I had a rather planned out future. After being here for 3 months, I thought those plans might have to change." Although she loves studying and working in Korea, she has decided to go back to USF and finish her degree program.

Congratulations to Kimberly on winning the Fall 2017 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship!
