2017 Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention

Osniel Quintana, originally from Tampa, FL, is a proud recipient of the 2017 Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention. This award afforded him the opportunity to propose his research on the integration of machine learning into society. His research focuses on ways a computer learns from its environment and supports the daily tasks of humans. This research involved the design of a system that is able to accurately predict a fall hazard in the environment given a stream of images. Osniel goal was to facilitate commutes for the elderly and visually impaired population.

During the application process, he worked closely with ONS. "Dr. Sayandeb Basu, Director of ONS, was my greatest support throughout this journey," he says. "He believed in me and my work, and that is the kind of support which helps student push further and dream higher. I can confidently say that without his help, and the help offered through ONS, I would not have accomplished my goals."

He attributes his success to his strong support network. "Thanks to the support of my mentors and peers, I always found a way to get back on the right track," says Osniel. "I have never settled for halfway efforts, and I realized that only through hard work I can obtain elite results."

In the future, he plans to obtain a doctoral degree and conduct professional research at a group such as Google DeepMind's project, or teach at the college level.

Congratulations to Osniel on winning the 2017 Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention!
