Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Spring 2017) - Study Abroad in the United Kingdom

Peter Kivuva, originally from St. Petersburg, FL, is a proud recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Spring 2017). This award afforded him the opportunity to develop meaningful skills while helping others. "The Gilman Scholarship aided in my personal and professional development unlike anything else in my life," he says. "It gave me the opportunity to grow holistically while I was studying and interning abroad."

Peter worked closely with ONS throughout the application process. "USF and ONS were at the forefront of aiding in the application process, scholarship searches, critiquing scholarship essays, financial aid assistance, academic credit transfers, and even my safety while abroad," he says. "From searching for the best study abroad program to a re-entry event tailored specifically for post-study abroad students, I am grateful for a school that offered a multitude of resources to support me in every step of the way."

He attributes his success to the support of family and friends. "My friends and family offered emotional support by reminding me how much I wanted this dream when I sometimes would lose sight." He also attributes his success to his determination to succeed after learning he did not win the Gilman Scholarship in Spring 2016. "I tried again in Spring 2017, giving myself ample time to prepare, find scholarship opportunities, speak with study abroad alumni, and ultimately gear up for what would be the greatest six months of my life."

Peter feels this award was instrumental to his success because it allowed him to study and intern abroad in London, England during Spring 2017. "I met the greatest friends from all across the globe who I will cherish for the rest of my life," he says. "I expanded my professional network and now have connections with companies in the United Kingdom."

After graduation, Peter plans to work for a company with a global footprint and strong global initiative values. He also plans to be an advocate for first-generation college students like him, who never imagined opportunities such as these, would be within reach.

Congratulations to Peter on winning the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship!
