Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Summer 2017)

Rebecca Howell, originally from Brandon, FL, is a proud recipient of the Summer 2017 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This award provided an opportunity for her to study abroad to Costa Rica and study Spanish. Rebecca been studying Spanish for five years, and this trip allowed her to take a huge step in the language learning process.

Rebecca worked closely with ONS throughout the application process. "I worked closely with the Office of National Scholarships when I was in the process of applying for this award," she says. "They helped me so incredibly much during my application process, and I do not think I would have won the award without their guidance. They truly know what Gilman is looking for and that truly made the difference in writing my award-winning essay."

She attributes her success to winning the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and says she would not have been able to study abroad without the funding this award provides. "For me, classroom time built a knowledge base, but nothing replaces real-life practice and experience," she says.

In the future, Rebecca plans to apply for a college student affairs position. She is excited to help a wide variety of students on university campuses, and knowing Spanish will enable her to more easily connect with those students.

Congratulations to Rebecca on winning the Summer 2017 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship!
