Class of Spring 2019
2017 Goldwater Honorable Mention
As a first-generation college student and one of the youngest national nominees for the Goldwater Scholarship, he feels his accomplishments have affirmed his aspirations.
During the application process, Sanim was active in undergraduate research. "USF provided me an environment to grow by providing me the opportunities and resources to pursue my dreams," he says. "I had the freedom to engage in undergraduate research in my first semester of college."
While conducting undergraduate research, Sanim worked closely with ONS on the Goldwater Scholarship application. "ONS was able to accentuate on my experiences to compete for national scholarships," he says. "During the process, I was able to create a timeline of my undergraduate career all the way until graduation; without ONS, I would not be on the trajectory that I am currently on."
Sanim says he is successful due to the support of USF faculty and staff. "I attribute my success to my faculty mentors, Dr. Bhethanabotla and Dr. Frisina, for providing me guidance on my research and inspiring me to pursue a career in academia," he says. "I would also like to thank Dr. Basu for providing me advice and mentorship on the Goldwater application and my undergraduate career."
In the future, he plans to apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and apply for Ph.D. programs in Biomedical Engineering. "I plan to continue on to graduate school," Sanim says. "This achievement also inspired me to revolutionize undergraduate research at USF by founding the Undergraduate Research Society and starting an undergraduate research journal."
His graduate studies will focus on research interests in experimental electrophysiology and computational biology to obtain a holistic understanding of biological mechanisms. Ultimately, he plans to pursue a tenure-track faculty position.
Congratulations to Sanim on winning the Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention!
