Dr. George Philippidis receives Fulbright Specialist award to visit Taiwan
December 6th, 2018
In November 2018, Dr. George Philippidis traveled to Taiwan on a prestigious Fulbright Specialist award by the US Department of State. Dr. Philippidis is spearheading the development of a partnership for sustainability education between the University of South Florida and Tunghai University (THU) in Taichung City, Taiwan.
While in Taiwan, Dr. Philippidis was invited to give lectures on USF’s graduate sustainability program and to present his research on biofuels/bioproducts and sustainability policy to audiences at THU (Taichung), National Cheng Kung University (Tainan), National Taiwan University (Taipei), and the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (Taoyuan). The Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering and Dean of the International Office at THU, Dr. Hong-Wei Yen, was Dr. Philippidis’ host.
Based on a collaboration agreement signed last year between THU and USF, the Patel College of Global Sustainability and the International College at THU will explore officially linking THU’s undergraduate programs in “Sustainability Science and Engineering” and “International Business Administration” (both conducted fully in English) with USF’s graduate program in “Global Sustainability”. Qualified undergraduate students from Taiwan and other Southeastern Asian countries can be admitted USF’s Master’s degree in global sustainability following completion of their bachelor’s degree at THU. Other future joint activities explored by the two universities include research collaboration in renewable energy, faculty and student exchanges, on-line course offerings and student mentorship.
