Hello all and welcome,
My name is Dr. Jonathan Mitchell and I am a licensed staff psychologist here at the Counseling Center. I'm thrilled to be a member of this outstanding team, and I am excited for the opportunity to help our community pursue health and wellness.
My practice as a psychologist is a bit of a second act for me – in a former life, I studied classical and jazz trombone as a music education major at the University of Miami. I put down my instruments (just for a moment) and pivoted to psychology at the University of Central Florida where I received my graduate degrees, including a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. I have always had a strong interest in the intersections of behavior, health, and medicine, so I focused on this area during my internship at Alpert Medical School of Brown University and later as a faculty member at UCF. I came to the Counseling Center to keep delivering high quality, evidence-based treatment to a diverse group of young adults and to get more involved in training health service psychologists.
My work with students is centered on the idea that we all get off-track from time to time. By identifying, questioning, and modifying our unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior, we allow more beneficial patterns to take hold and we build skills to guide us back to where we want to be. Ultimately, my goal is to help craft personalized and adaptive action plans that let students build for themselves greater stability, balance, and fulfillment.
