Dr. Allison Crume
Dean, Undergraduate Studies
Associate Vice President, Student Success
Dr. Crume was appointed Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Associate Vice President for Student Success at the University of South Florida in August 2020. She is responsible for coordinating the development and delivery of a high-quality undergraduate student experience across all campuses. Dr. Crume serves as the principal administrator of undergraduate academic programs and support services.
Prior to joining the University of South Florida, Dr. Crume served in multiple administrative roles including Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Florida State University. She also worked for the Board of Governors, State University System of Florida in academic and student affairs. Dr. Crume started her career in education as a high school history teacher in Roberta, Georgia.
Dr. Crume completed her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at Florida State University. Her additional degrees are a M.A.T. in Broad Field Social Science and a B.S. in History from Georgia College & State University. She served as adjunct faculty in the Higher Education program at Florida State University, College of Education teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses. Her research interests include student success, women in higher education, accessibility, and campus governance.
Merlina is an innovative professional with over 15 years of experience in executive level support at the University of South Florida. Merlina supports the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and works closely with the Associate Dean, four Assistant Deans and 19 departments within the unit. Prior to working in the Office of Undergraduate Studies she served in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs which housed over 25 USF departments as well as WUSF Public Media.
Cheryl has worked in variety of marketing, communications, and public relations positions at the university since 2005. Some of her work includes promoting programs across USF and the state of Florida, educating new USF employees on the mission of student success, and de-escalating and resolving student issues sent to the president’s office. Cheryl has a BS from the University of Wisconsin – Stout and her passion for education started with her own life changing educational experience.
Dr. Betancourt earned her M.S. in Clinical Linguistics from University of Potsdam, Germany followed by her M.S. and Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of South Florida. She was an inaugural fellow of the Doctoral Leadership Program at USF and has recently completed the Professional Development in Higher Education Leadership Program. Before joining Undergraduate Studies she was an Instructor and Director of the Language, Speech, and Hearing Undergraduate Program for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She was also the Chair of the General Education Council for two years and helped lead the effort of the General Education Enhancement at USF.
In her role with Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Betancourt continues to work with the General Education Council to implement the Enhanced General Education curriculum and assessment. She also oversees UGS Academics, the unit that handles all of the UGS academic offerings. Finally, she now oversees the UGS Curriculum Team responsible for maintaining and producing the undergraduate catalog and course proposal system. She will also provide administrative support to the Undergraduate Council.

Dr. Larry Braue served for 27 years in the United States Army retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. In 2010, Dr. Braue became the Director of the Office of Veteran Success at the University of South Florida where he continues to serve our veterans by creating opportunities for academic, professional, and lifelong success.
Dr. Braue holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, a Masters of Arts in Human Resource Management from Central Michigan University and a Bachelors of Arts in Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Howard received her B.A. in Sociology from Montclair State University in New Jersey. She earned a M.S. in Sociology and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Howard joined Undergraduate Studies the fall semester of 2017. She previously held positions in higher education at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Her professional experience and background in the areas of student success, structural reorganization, and strategic planning contribute to meeting institutional goals and, above all, supporting students.
Dr. Melissa Irvin
Assistant Dean, Advising and Analytics
Dr. Irvin earned her B.A. in Psychology from Duke University, a M.Ed in Educational Leadership from Middle Tennessee State University, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education Policy and Leadership from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. Prior to joining Undergraduate Studies in Fall 2017, she was Assistant Vice-President of Student Success at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee.
As Assistant Dean, Dr. Irvin supports initiatives within academic advising community and leads the Office of Academic Advocacy as well as the Academic Services for USF Athletics. Other responsibilities include functional support for Archivum Insights student success management system, Civitas, DegreeWorks and other technology tools. Her background includes work in academic advising, first-year experience programming and campus-wide retention initiatives. Dr. Irvin’s research interests focus on exploring effective ways of monitoring and measuring student progression as well as evaluating strategies for early interventions to improve student success outcomes.
Areas of Responsibility
Steve is a Certified Data Scientist with over eight years of experience designing and implementing data driven decision-making frameworks within education settings from PreK to HigherEd; advising educators across the country on enhancing at-risk student identification practices and steering student outcomes. Steve works collaboratively across business units to support the continued improvement of program development and other practices that contribute to all areas of student success. His expertise includes: assessment design, software development, data modeling, machine learning, design thinking, and student success innovation.
John F. Sarao CDR, USN (Ret.)
ROTC Acting Executive Director, Joint Military Leadership Center
John oversees all programs that enhance the quality of education and training for the university's ROTC units by maintaining a unique, state of the art, joint training facility; sponsorship of joint activities for ROTC students; and promotion of joint planning and inter-service cooperation. He also serves as the ROTC Living Learning Community (LLC) Program Director. John served 28 years on active duty as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, is a USF Alumnus (M.Ed. – 2002) and has a B.S. degree in Physics (1976) from the U.S. Naval Academy.
Dr. Yee earned a Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of California at Irvine, and has served in a variety of roles at Pomona College, the University of Iowa, Duke University, and the University of Central Florida, before his arrival at USF in 2012. His background in faculty development enables him to bring his knowledge of teaching and learning to the wider university community as Assistant Dean.
