“For the Common Good: A New History of Higher Education in America” examines 200 years of college and university history in order to answer a fundamental historical question dating to the nation’s founding: How have colleges and universities contributed to the public good?

In the book, Dr. Dorn discusses USF as the first public, four-year institution established in the 20th century to serve a “non-traditional” urban student population. He highlights USF’s crucial role in providing a model for serving those students and describes how USF represented a dramatic illustration of institutional reform and innovation in higher education at the time of its founding.
