Congratulations to the Class of 2030 of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine on getting your white coats!
And congratulations to your friends and family as well. They have helped you reach this day, and I always enjoy seeing families' love and pride as they see your dreams become reality.
This is such an important milestone, and I hope you will remain mindful of the powerful symbolism of your white coat as you make your way through medical school.
As you do, hold fast to your four commitments:
· Compassionate care. Patient care is the heart of medicine. As physicians, you must balance objectivity with empathy, always listening with respect and concern. Your new stethoscope should be a reminder of the power of listening to your patients.
· Scientific integrity. Medicine is grounded in scientific evidence and critical thinking. Physicians must be ambassadors for science — open to new ideas but also to critical feedback; humble in learning but steadfast in the pursuit of truth.
· Lifelong learning and grit. Medical knowledge doubles about every month. To keep pace, you must commit yourself to lifelong learning, and to do that you must cultivate grit and perseverance. Challenges will come — so will frustration, doubt, and fatigue — but the same passion that brought you here will carry you forward.
· Gratitude. Medicine is about giving back. Care for your patients, serve your community, and support the institutions that supported you.
Prioritize these commitments and they will help you rise to the challenges of medical school. Carry them with you, just as you’ll carry the stethoscope that you also received. Think of them as riding along in the pocket of your white coat. Whenever you need them, your four commitments will be there with you — ready to provide an extra dose of inspiration and strength.
