Who can take the Online Instructor Certification course?
Innovative Education's first priority for SACS accreditation will be to certify faculty who are currently teaching or scheduled to teach online. If you are not teaching online but would like to attend the certification course please send an email to Lindsey Mercer and provide your net ID along with the date you would like to attend. Enrollment requests will be based on available space within each cohort.
I have taught online previously. Is it still required that I go through this course?
Yes. Even if you have taught online before, the course is required for everyone who is teaching online courses offered through USF Tampa Campus.
Quote from Provost Wilcox during the Oct. 16, 2013 Faculty Senate Meeting, in reference to completing the Online Instructor Certification Course: "You will probably say, 'I've been delivering this course online for years. I know everything there is to know.' Well, SACS doesn't know that. SACS requires documentation that every instructor teaching online has to complete a professional development program. We're trying to soften that irritation that some of you might feel by compensating you for your time."
In order to meet USF's SACS accreditation standards 3.4.12, 3.4.9, 3.7.1, 3.7.2, and 3.7.3, all faculty that teach online are required to complete a certification course. Online Instructor Certification is that course at USF.
What are the consequences if I do not take the course?
You may risk not being certified to teach online on the USF Tampa Campus. There is also a risk of non-reaccreditation.
What will I learn in the Online Instructor Certification course?
The course has a number of objectives and outcomes but its primary goal is to introduce you to core best practices of online instruction and methods for incorporating those best practices into your Canvas course.
- Develop professional learning networks (PLN's) while sharing and learning from faculty-peers
- Test out new methods/tools in a "safe" environment.
- Confer with experts about their online course/instructional methods.
- Meet USF's SACS accreditation standards 3.4.12, 3.4.9, 3.7.1, 3.7.2, and 3.7.3, and the requirement that all faculty who teach online complete the required certification course
What is the duration of the course?
The course is five weeks delivered as weekly modules.
What is the approximate time commitment?
Depending upon the module topic and the participant pacing, each module will take approximately 1 to 3 hours to complete.
What is the required attendance?
Participants will not be required to be present at a physical location. All required weekly assignments and participations will be conducted online through Canvas.
Why can't I just complete the course in one week?
This is designed as an authentic online course experience. There are several interactions with peer-colleagues that necessitate a pacing schedule.
