After more than 50 years as a nurse, Patricia Quigley, PhD, MPH, APRN, FAAN, FAANP, FARN, has led a distinguished career of achievement and impact. This year at the USF Doctoral Commencement Ceremony, the university recognized her contributions to the nursing workforce with an Honorary Doctor of Nursing, one of USF's most significant tributes.
Now a nurse consultant, Quigley is an inspiration to graduating nurses. She has worked as both a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and a nurse practitioner (NP) in rehabilitation. Nationally recognized for her contributions to patient safety, nursing, and rehabilitation, Quigley has focused on clinical practice innovations designed to promote older adults’ independence and safety. Her research on falls and fall-injury prevention continues to drive research across health services nationwide.
Quigley began her nursing journey in 1973, graduating with USF College of Nursing’s first cohort. She then continued her education with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at USF and a PhD at the University of Florida. 14 years later, she returned to USF for a post-doctoral degree, earning a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2006.
This lifelong learner is also a lifelong volunteer. She was past president of both the Florida Nurses Association (FNA) and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN), in addition to joining many committees and task forces.
From candy striper to award-winning nurse scientist, Quigley recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the ARN. This Bull Nurse is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2006), the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (2010), and the ARN (inaugural class, 2019).
For me now—72 yrs old, celebrating my 51st year as a nurse—everything is a miracle,” Quigley said. “I challenge and hope to serve as an inspiration to all USF Trailblazers.
