SHARP: A Commitment to Employee Well-Being and Safety Excellence

Every employer wants their employees to return home safely at the end of the workday. Companies that consistently achieve this goal share a common characteristic: they have made workplace safety and health a core organizational value.

One of the highest recognitions available to small employers for demonstrating this commitment is participation in OSHA's Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).

SHARP recognizes small employers that operate exemplary safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below industry averages. More than an award, SHARP represents a measurable commitment to protecting workers, reducing risk, and creating a culture in which safety is integrated into every aspect of operations. The USF SafetyFlorida Consultation Program continues to expand SHARP participation while helping employers strengthen their safety and health management systems through no-cost consultation services.

Why SHARP Matters

Organizations that pursue SHARP understand that safety is not simply a compliance obligation. A strong safety and health management system can lead to:

  • Fewer workplace injuries and illnesses
  • Reduced workers' compensation costs
  • Improved employee morale and retention
  • Greater operational efficiency and productivity
  • Increased management and employee engagement
  • Enhanced reputation with customers and stakeholders

The most successful organizations recognize that investing in safety is also an investment in their workforce. Employees who believe their employer genuinely cares about their well-being are more likely to be engaged, productive, and committed to organizational success.

Employee Well-Being Starts with Leadership Commitment

A key element of SHARP is management's visible commitment to employee well-being. Successful SHARP employers actively involve workers in identifying hazards, improving work processes, and building a positive safety culture.

When employees feel empowered to report concerns, participate in safety committees, and contribute ideas for improvement, organizations often experience stronger safety performance and fewer incidents. SHARP employers demonstrate that safety is not the responsibility of one department or one individual. Rather, it is a shared commitment embraced by leadership and employees alike.

The Business Impact of Preventing Injuries

Workplace injuries can have significant consequences for both employees and employers. Beyond the direct costs, injuries may result in lost productivity, overtime expenses, workforce disruptions, and reduced morale.

The impact of effective safety and health management is evident in the results achieved through consultation activities in Florida. During FY 2025, the USF SafetyFlorida Consultation Program identified more than 1,000 workplace hazards and helped remove more than 21,500 employees from hazardous conditions. In addition, participating employers avoided more than $18 million in potential OSHA penalties and fines.

These results demonstrate a simple truth: when hazards are identified and corrected before injuries occur, workers benefit and businesses prosper.

A Pathway to Safety Excellence

Many employers view SHARP as a destination, but it is also a journey of continuous improvement. Through consultation services, employers receive assistance in evaluating hazards, improving safety programs, strengthening employee involvement, and developing effective management systems.

For organizations not yet ready for SHARP, the Florida Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award provides an opportunity to recognize meaningful progress while building toward future SHARP participation. The goal is to help employers establish a sustainable pathway toward safety excellence and long-term injury prevention.

Is Your Company Ready?

Organizations that demonstrate strong management commitment, active employee involvement, effective hazard control, and injury and illness rates below industry averages may be strong candidates for SHARP recognition.

Companies that achieve SHARP status join an elite group of employers, currently numbering ten (10) in the State of Florida, recognized for their dedication to protecting workers and maintaining outstanding safety and health management systems. Current Florida SHARP sites represent organizations that have demonstrated excellence in workplace safety and made employee well-being a central component of their business strategy.

Take the Next Step

Workplace safety excellence does not happen by accident. It requires planning, leadership, employee engagement, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

If your organization is interested in learning more about SHARP, contact the USF SafetyFlorida Consultation Program to schedule a no-cost, confidential consultation. Together, we can build safer workplaces, reduce injuries, and help ensure that every worker returns home safe and healthy at the end of the day.
