Frequently Asked Questions
Below we have broken questions into groupings: Summer Decision, Orientation, Housing, Parking, and ACE Specific. Please scroll through to find helpful information.
● I applied to the fall semester but was accepted to the summer semester, what does this mean?
o First, congratulations on being accepted to USF! USF Admissions is rolling admissions, meaning the exact entry requirements for a term vary depending on the application date, application file completion date, and the space available in the semester for which the student applied. The fall semester is the most competitive semester for which to apply. Students' applications must meet a certain high school GPA and college placement test scores to be directly admitted into the fall semester. If a student's application does not meet the fall semester requirements, depending on the time the student applied, students will be conditionally admitted to start during the summer semester or spring semester as long as their GPA or college placement test scores are competitive. Your admissions offer is contingent upon your enrolling at USF for the summer semester and participation in the Summer ACE program. Once you complete the program, you will transition into the fall semester like our other summer students. All course credits earned in ACE are degree applicable. ● Will this take all summer? How long is ACE exactly? (Starts later in the semester July)
o If a student is admitted to the traditional summer term, but not the ACE program, they are expected to attend during the entire summer B term, which starts on June 26. In an attempt to consider Out-of-State high school graduation dates, the ACE program operates on an alternative calendar starting July 9 with move-in. Please see our Calendar page for exact dates. ACE is a 5 week program with four weeks on campus and one week abroad.
● Will anything be closed during my summer semester? How is summer different than fall and spring? (Resources available/not available in the summer)
o During the summer, there are select options for dining and housing. Certain dining services and housing options may not be open during the summer semester that are open during the fall and spring semester. Just like fall and spring, summer also has Week of Welcome and the First Fifty Days events to encourage students to get involved on campus. Students, who start in the summer term, have a chance to get ahead with earning credit towards their degree. With less students on campus than in the fall, students have closer experiences with their peers and USF staff. Students, who start in the summer, often say they feel the summer helped acclimate them to campus, making them feel like experts whenever the fall term starts. There is one week between the end of the ACE travel and the start of the fall term, where the dining facilities have limited hours. There is an extra fee for dining during the week between ACE and the fall term. Students are encouraged to carefully budget for the week between terms.
● What is the benefit of summer and specifically the Summer ACE Program?
o Students, who attend ACE, are able to start later in the summer (July 9th) and are
invited to join a community, which is focused on their successful transition into
the University of South Florida.
o In attending the Summer ACE Program, students will have the opportunity to travel for one week through the travel abroad experience portion of the program.
o All students entering USF with fewer than 60 semester hours of credit are required to earn at least nine (9) semester hours of credit prior to graduation by attendance during one or more summer semesters in courses offered by a USF System Institution or any one of the Florida State University System institutions.
o Remember: Enrolling in summer sessions is a great way to get ahead, lessen your academic load for the fall and spring, retake a course, or take a prerequisite or pre-professional course.
● Do I have to come to USF on a specific date for orientation?
o Students in the ACE program are guaranteed a spot for the Monday, July 10th - Tuesday,
July 11th Orientation date. ACE students will only be able to sign up for this date.
It is a full, normal orientation program for both the summer and fall admit students.
This date is included in ACE programming to make your transition convenient. Students
should receive updates from the Office of Orientation with details about how to register.
o ACE students will have the opportunity to sign up for their "MyOrientation" experience on Monday, March 13, 2017 when the reservation system launches. Here is a link to where the magic happens.
● Is Orientation just an ACE thing? Will there be other students attending, who are not in the ACE program?
o Orientation is a two day event, which all new USF students need to attend. During the MyOrientation experiences, students will be introduced to USF culture and meet with their academic advisors to discuss their degree sequence and to schedule their fall classes. There will be students, who are not in ACE, also attending the July 10-11th program. All ACE students are required to attend the July 10-11th Orientation.
● Are parents/family required to attend Orientation?
o Parents/family are not required to attend MyOrientation but able to attend – parent/family registration includes a separate registration cost. ACE students have a slightly cheaper fee than non ACE students since their meals overlap with their meal plan. ● As an ACE student, do I need to attend a separate Orientation for the fall term?
o No, all incoming USF students only need to attend one Orientation. The July 10th – 11th Orientation will suffice for ACE students, as they will be scheduling their fall courses during this session..
● ACE students will live in Poplar Hall, a suite style residence hall during the summer. What is a suite style room and what does it look like?
o Suite style halls offer a balance between independence and convenience. With bathrooms
shared only by suitemates, suites provide more privacy than traditional rooms. Each
suite consists of two double bedrooms and one bathroom. The hall is single-sex by
suite and coed by floor.

● Can I stay in the same room from Summer ACE for the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters as well? Do I have to stay in the same room?
o All ACE students have the option to reside in the same room from the Summer ACE
program during the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters but it is not required. In
order to keep the same room, students will need to do the following:
▪ fill out two housing applications (one for Summer ACE and the second for fall 2017 and spring 2018).
▪ list Poplar Hall as their #1 preference when they complete their fall 2017 and spring 2018 housing application.
● How many housing applications do ACE students need to fill out?
o ACE students need to fill out the summer housing application. If students would like to continue to live on campus during the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters, they need to please fill out a second housing application. ACE students have the option to remain in their same room throughout their entire first year (July-May). We strongly endorse this option as ACE students will only have to move into the residence hall once and our main goal is to help to build a strong, dependable ACE community. ACE staff are planning to continue programs in Poplar Hall during the fall and spring semesters to further support the ACE student's transition. If you would like to remain in the same residence hall, make sure to select Poplar Hall as your preference on the fall 2017 and spring 2018 housing application. We look forward to meeting you when ACE moves in on July 9th.
● Can I bring a car?
○ Students are able to bring their own vehicle to campus but are responsible to acquire the appropriate permit through USF Parking and Transportation Services and park in the related lot to their permit type.
● Do I have to bring a car?
○ The decision on whether or not to bring a car is up to the students and their parents/guardians. Throughout their enrollment at USF, students have access to the USF Bull Runner and Tampa Bay transit system with their USF ID card. There are also other alternative transportation options available to all USF students.
● What are the parking lots I will be able to park at when I come to campus?
○ Depending on what permit a student purchases, there are certain parking lots for
certain permits. The parking lot in front of Juniper Poplar Hall is for resident parking
and the parking garage next to Juniper Poplar Hall requires a garage specific permit.
○ Please visit the USF Parking and Transportation Services website for an overview with how different parking permits work at USF. Here is a map with the different parking lots on campus.
● What are the mentors roles during ACE?
○ During the ACE program. students will have two ACE specific mentors whose roles are to ensure and promote the students' safety, summer success, and campus involvement. The mentors will be available to help students with personal as well as academic concerns, as they serve as a guide for the ACE summer experience. All ACE mentors are students who have completed the Summer ACE Program.
● How do you choose classes for ACE?
○ Within two weeks of submitting their admissions enrollment deposit or waiver, students will receive instructions from an ACE staff member with a link to a Google Form where students will be allowed to prioritize their preferences for their Foundations of Knowledge and Learning (FKL) course in the ACE program. Student enrollment and course selection is based on a first-come-first-serve basis. The ACE staff aims to register students for their priority course, also taking into consideration any other college level credits student may have already earned in high school.
● What classes are there to choose from?
● Do the classes that we are taking this summer satisfy requirements needed for my major?
○ Yes, ACE coursework will satisfy select major and graduation requirements.
○ Graduation requirement: All students entering USF with fewer than 60 semester hours of credit are required to earn at least nine (9) semester hours of credit prior to graduation by attendance during one or more summer semesters in courses offered by a USF System Institution or any one of the Florida State University System institutions.
○ Major requirement: ACE students are required to take one FKL course, which satisfies one of their general requirements, depending on the type of course.
● How many credits are these classes since they are shortened courses?
○ ACE students will be enrolled full-time for the summer term, which means that they will be taking six credits during the program. These courses will be accelerated and tailored for the length of the program.
● What documents are necessary to study abroad?
○ To study abroad outside the United States, students will be required to submit an
Education Abroad Application, which will be provided to students after enrollment
and course selection.
○ Students traveling outside of the country will be required to have a passport which is valid through February 13, 2018.
● What is the University Experience class, which we are required to take?
○ University Experience is a three-credit course focused on an extended introduction
to USF with emphasis on career planning, study skills, academic advising, and academic
and campus resources.
○ As a part of the course students will be working towards their requirements for the Global Citizen Award. In the University Experience course, students will also partner with the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE) for a community service learning opportunity with partners within the Tampa Bay community.
● What do we do during the week in between the study abroad experience and the fall semester?
○ During this time, students will have the option to travel back home for this week-long break or to remain in the residence halls. There may be additional housing and dining fees depending on where the students are residing during the break.
● What is CampU?
○ CampU is a three day, two night, off-campus experience filled with fun interactive social
activities that are rooted in the four pillars of: Friendship, Tradition, Identity,
○ All ACE students are required to attend CampU as part of the Summer ACE Program, and the cost for the program is covered by ACE programming.
○ For ACE students, CampU will take place between Thursday, July 13th - Saturday, July 15th. Transportation from the USF Tampa Campus to the Daysprings Camp site will be provided by ACE programming.
● How will CampU help me?
● What do we need for CampU?

● When do we select our classes for fall?
○ Fall courses will be selected during orientation with the help of an academic advisor. Academic advisors take into consideration all attempted post-secondary credit which the student attempted in high school. It is important that the student submit their official test scores and post secondary transcripts to the Office of Admissions to ensure their attempted credits are available for the academic advisor to see.
● How much does it cost to do ACE?
○ The cost of the ACE program varies depending on the type of course a student decides
to take and the study away location for the course. Here is the break down and estimate of the program.
○ ACE students can be considered for financial aid by submitting the 2016-2017 FAFSA in addition to the 2017-2018 FAFSA.
○ The cost to fly or commute to the study abroad experiences are included in the cost of the program.
● What apps should I download that will be most useful for this transition?
○ Students can download the MyUSF mobile app in order to check their bull bucks balance, assess campus maps, view dining information,
track the bull runner and more.
○ The Canvas app is also helpful by allowing students to view their courses, assess their grades and assignments, and contact professors.
