Professional Development
Our department provides professional socialization to its graduate students through professional development seminars held on Thursday afternoons, 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. These seminars are presented by faculty throughout the department and cover a wide range of topics, including:
- How to make the most out of the USF Library and its resources;
- How and where to find data for your research;
- How and where to find money (i.e., fellowships and grants) for your research;
- How to choose faculty to serve as members of thesis, portfolio, and dissertation committees;
- How to foster professional relationships with other graduate students, faculty, colleagues at other universities, prospective employers, or prospective reviewers of your research;
- How to approach challenging situations in classroom contexts as either a student, TA, or instructor;
- How to approach challenging situations in professional contexts, such as at academic conferences;
- How to create and perfect your curriculum vitae;
- How to deliver an effective research presentation;
- For master's students, how to discern whether going into a doctoral program is right for you;
- How to discern between academic and non-academic career paths;
- How to search for jobs using the ASA Employment Bulletin and other job listings.
