Welcome to the Science Education Program - where pedagogy is both an art and a science! You will find that our faculty have cultivated international reputations with their diverse and timely research programs.
Coursework is informed by empirical research and scholarship embedded in established and emerging theoretical traditions, philosophy, best practices related to pedagogical content knowledge, and a touch of common sense.
We offer programs for undergraduates, master's degree students, and doctoral students. The undergraduate programs prepare students to teach secondary biology, chemistry, or physics, grades 6-12. In addition, we have a program dedicated to the preparation of middle school science teachers.
There are two science education master's degrees: the MEd and the MAT. Most MEd students already have a teaching certificate and are seeking to improve their knowledge and skills related to science education. The MAT program prepares students who have an undergraduate background in the sciences to be teachers of biology, chemistry or physics. There is also an accelerated master's program, which provides the opportunity for USF science undergraduates to complete their science degrees and the MAT in a total of five years.
Our doctoral program prepares future scholars and experts with a solid background in the field of science education to be researchers and leaders in the field of science education. Many of our students go on to be professors of science education. Others continue to serve the public through teaching and leadership in K-12 schools.
