Energizing Music Education: Learners Taking Charge
Learners and teachers depend on each other for music education to move forward. They energize each other by way of musical ideas, musical actions, and feedback. They exchange energies via sound, communication, collaboration, leadership, decision making, and problem solving. While teachers have long been in the driver's seat, learners should be aware of their potential role to take charge. Music educators and learners must be constantly searching for a balance in the midst of these exchanges for music education to advance.
We invite participation in an exciting format that emphasizes participant interactions and tangible products. Suncoast XII will feature research and practical application of matters related to learner-centered pedagogies and other methods for empowering students in music education settings, both traditional and new. Topics could include, but not limited to, the following:

Suncoast Declaration
A special feature of this year's Symposium will occur on the final morning (Saturday). All Symposium attendees will take part in drafting a summary Suncoast Declaration for the profession. This document will be a brief statement providing a basis for future developments in music education. Ideas for the Declaration will be collected throughout the Symposium. We hope to publish the Suncoast Declaration in different formats after the Symposium.
Types of Presentations
- Posters
- Two time-slots dedicated to posters
- Lightning Talks
- 5-minute presentations, each followed by a 5-minute discussion period
- Oral Presentations
- 15-minute presentations, arranged around similar topics, followed by a 20-minute discussion period per topic
Presentation Requirements: All presenters must register to attend the symposium by the pre-registration deadline so their names will be included in the program.

Up to 250 words max for oral presentations, lightning talks, and posters
Choose one: oral presentation only, lightning talk only, poster only, oral presentation or poster, lightning talk or poster
The Executive Board of the Center for Music Education Research serves as the blind review panel for all presentation types. Submit abstracts to David A. Williams at davidw@usf.edu . Attach a pdf, Word, or Pages file that includes the proposal title, abstract, and type(s) of presentation formats for which you are applying. In the body of the email provide all proposer name(s), email, current position, institutional affiliation, and proposal title. Please type "Suncoast 2019 Submission" in the Subject field. All communications will be with the lead author for collaborative submissions.
