Diversity & Inclusion
The School of Geosciences (SGS) defines diversity as the full spectrum of attributes, affiliations, and statuses that characterize individuals within society, including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, political beliefs, and professional affiliation. The committee recognizes that, collectively, these identities inform and shape one’s ways of thinking about the geosciences, as well as the ways that one interacts and engages with the geosciences community.
The SGS defines inclusion as valuing the contributions of diversity to the geosciences, both in and out of the classroom, and respecting the individual identities of participants engaged in executing its vision, mission, and strategic priorities. Inclusion encompasses efforts to provide equitable access to participation in SGS activities at all levels, including academic programs, employment, and leadership positions, regardless of personal identity. Inclusion also encompasses efforts to ensure that the SGS is a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all faculty, staff, students, alumni, and visitors.
The SGS values diversity and inclusion, because they promote the success of faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as enhance the societal relevance and impact of the SGS. The SGS is committed to providing equal opportunities, fostering mutual respect, challenging stereotyped preconceptions, and condemning all forms of discrimination, racism, and prejudice.
The USF School of Geosciences (SGS) Diversity, Anti-Racism, and Equity (DAE) Committee was formed ad hoc during the 2020-2021 academic year. The committee was tasked with developing a D&I Strategic Plan. The plan reflects the vision that diversity and inclusion are recognized and celebrated as being essential for the success of SGS faculty, staff, students, and alumni; and these facets can only be achieved through actively promoting anti-racism, equity, and justice. This plan was voted on and unanimously approved in the Spring of 2022.
