Undergraduate Degrees
The USF School of Music offers three undergraduate degree programs with three areas of study within our Bachelor of Music (BM). Music minors are no longer available and details for each of our undergraduate programs are outlined below. Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education
The Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education is a professional degree for students who are interested in teaching music in K-12 schools in the ever changing music classrooms of the 21st century. This program is an intense study of music and education courses that provide students with state certification upon graduation. In addition to private study on their principle instrument and participation in ensembles, students complete music theory, history and literature sequences, and take a variety of music education courses. Our degree program challenges and prepares future educators to not only embrace the traditions of music education, but also to incorporate new potentials that can reach additional populations of students interested in making music using alternative methods. The program progresses towards a semester-long, student-teaching experience in area schools and can also include a study abroad experience in and around London, England. Admission into the program requires an audition on your major instrument as well as a faculty interview.
Bachelor of Music Degree
The Bachelor of Music is a professional degree for students who wish to pursue a career in music. Students interested in a BM can choose between four areas of concentration: composition (acoustic and electronic music), contemporary commercial music, jazz studies and performance. This program requires 120 credit hours that includes intense private study on their principle instrument and participation in ensembles. Additionally, students complete music theory, history and literature sequences, and take additional course work in their chosen area of concentration. Graduates from BM programs at USF find themselves in very competitive positions for graduate study and musical careers. Admission into the program requires an audition on your major instrument. Each chosen concentration has a separate senior requirement that must be fulfilled in order to receive the degree of your choice. These concentrations correspond to each degree -- i.e. a vocal recital for vocal performance majors or recital and portfolio for composition majors.

Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in Music Studies is a non-professional degree for students who wish to supplement other interests with music study. This program is ideal as part of a double major with a field outside of music. Requirements include approximately 50 hours in music with emphasis choices in performance, composition, history and theory. Admission into the program requires an audition on your major instrument.
