The Opportunity

The University of South Florida invites nominations and applications for the next Lynn Pippenger Dean of the Muma College of Business. The University seeks an experienced, strategic, and innovative leader to serve as the next Muma College of Business Dean.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President, the next Dean will demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, an unwavering ethical compass, and a dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration. The Dean will be an enthusiastic communicator who will develop and implement a bold strategic vision for the College across three campuses. They will pursue clear strategic priorities and raise and manage resources effectively to advance those priorities.

The Dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the College. Core responsibilities include providing strategic leadership for three campuses in Tampa, Sarasota-Manatee, and St. Petersburg. The Dean will oversee the recruitment, development, and retention of the distinguished faculty and staff; continually improve the College’s research and teaching programs; steward the College’s resources and undertake creative fundraising; and build strong relationships with the College’s alumni, friends, donors, and Executive Advisory Councils. The Dean will closely partner with the University community and collaborate with fellow Deans on interdisciplinary programs, joint faculty appointments, strategic academic initiatives, and advancing student success. The deanship is an endowed position graciously funded by Lynn Pippenger.

The Muma College of Business 

The Muma College of Business is one of approximately 950 business colleges accredited by AACSB International and among the roughly 193 dually accredited in business and accounting. The Muma College of Business is home to 178 faculty, 71 adjuncts, and 114 staff members. With 13 undergraduate majors, 15 graduate programs, and three doctoral programs, the Muma College of Business is home to about 8,400 students. The College, which spans three campuses, is comprised of six schools: the Kate Tiedemann School of Business and Finance, the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy, the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the School of Information Systems and Management, the School of Marketing and Innovation, and the Baldwin Risk Partners School of Risk Management and Insurance. USF’s College of Business was named the USF Muma College of Business on October 10, 2014, following a $25 million gift given to the college by Pam and Les Muma.

The Muma College of Business creates business thinkers by challenging students with a rigorous curriculum taught by faculty who practice what they teach. The College provides meaningful learning opportunities and delivers relevant knowledge to our students to achieve success both in the classroom and after graduation. The College has a long-standing history of facilitating relationships with businesses in the greater Tampa Bay area to build a talent pipeline and support workforce development initiatives.

The Position

The next Dean of the Muma College of Business should be a leader with bold ideas, a vision to elevate the college, and an understanding of the core competencies that have made the college successful. The Dean must have a collaborative management style, a capacity to integrate diverse interests, and a passion to energize students, faculty, staff, and alumni worldwide to be agents of change in their community, industry, and world. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President.

Responsible for promoting the academic excellence of the College and University, the Dean will provide leadership for undergraduate and graduate education across three campuses. They will champion a culture of respect and inclusion across the college and beyond. The Muma College of Business has a physical presence across the Tampa Bay region, allowing students to enjoy all the advantages of attending a large metropolitan university while experiencing unique academic and cultural campus environments and providing vibrant, high-quality learning, research, campus life, and community engagement opportunities regardless of campus location. As an academic, administrative, and business community leader, the Dean will promote the visibility of the College, foster a high-quality student experience, support faculty and staff, and manage and grow the college's resources effectively. The Dean will be an engaged leader with strong interpersonal skills and bring experience and a capacity for administration and fundraising to the role. As the school's public face, they will work closely with business community leaders to develop the relationships necessary to ensure the College continues to generate new knowledge and keeps the curricula relevant. The Dean will work with alumni and other benefactors to enhance the reputation of the College and garner financial support.

The Muma College of Business has an operating budget of approximately $68,000,000 and an endowment value of roughly $78,000,000. The Dean should possess sound judgment and decision-making skills as the chief administrator of this complex organization across three campuses. They should play a key role in university leadership, advocating for the college, promoting governance, and forging internal and external strategic connections. As a key leader among the academic deans, the Dean must have the ability to work across disciplinary boundaries, seeking ways to collaborate with other entities for mutual benefit and advancement of the overall priorities of the university.

The Dean will demonstrate exemplary strategic leadership, outstanding interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial drive, and a passion for the mission of Muma College of Business and University. The Dean will be an energetic advocate for the College, articulating a compelling case for its standing among the nation's best business schools and securing support to achieve and maintain excellence in all domains. The ideal candidate will have a record of responding effectively to the rapidly changing demands on business schools and higher education more broadly.

  • Effective leadership of a complex academic enterprise or relevant leadership in a commensurate enterprise, illustrated by inclusive and unified internal governance and a strong supportive culture focusing on collaboration and excellence.
  • Experience as a strategic and collaborative leader with a record of success that brings constituencies together around a common goal.
  • Appreciate and understand academic excellence across all disciplines in the College and its connections to the university broadly.
  • Strong record of, appreciation for, and encouragement of high academic research and teaching standards and support for innovative educational initiatives led by faculty.
  • Capacity to serve as the external face of the school, the propensity and skills required to articulate the next stage of the school’s development efforts to alumni and corporate partners, and the ability to achieve development objectives.
  • Success in creating an environment that ensures the hiring, developing, and retaining tenure-track faculty, instructional faculty, and staff members.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage business executives in the college's work and connect faculty and students with opportunities to engage in mutually beneficial service with industry partners to solve pressing problems.

Education

Candidates must possess an earned doctorate or requisite terminal degree from an accredited higher education institution and experience and accomplishments that warrant appointment as a tenured full professor in the Muma College of Business.


Compensation

Compensation arrangements are competitive and commensurate with both experience and achievement.
