Training FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is this training and why do I need to take it?

A: Students and employees that have experienced sex discrimination (sexual harassment, sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking, or discrimination based on pregnancy/sexual orientation/identity) may disclose the incident to an instructor or supervisor if it has impacted their academics or employment. This training will ensure that USF employees respond appropriately to disclosures. The VAWA training will teach you active listening skills and the correct way to provide resources. The Title IX training will teach how you to correctly notify the Title IX Coordinator when you receive a disclosure and what support measures and options are available to someone who has experienced an incident.

Please note that both of these trainings will discuss sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking, coercion and force. Some may find this material upsetting. The University has resources to support you, including Victim Advocacy (813-974-5756) and the Employee Assistance Program (1-800-327-8705). More resources, including community resources, can be found on the USF Title IX website in the Get Help section. You should proceed through the training at your own pace and take breaks as needed.

Q: How do I access the training?

A: On the left side bar, click on Responsible Employee Training then in Step 1 click on the VAWA training link. Once finished, go to Step 2 and click on the Title IX training link. Together, these two modules are a complete Responsible Employee training. You should always take VAWA first and then the Title IX module. You must have a USF email address to access these courses in Canvas.

Q: Is this training required and if so, how often?

A: This training is required within 30 days of hire and then every other year thereafter for those employees that are designated as Responsible Employees (employee who teach or supervise at least one USF employee or student in any capacity.)

Q: How can I tell if it’s time for me to retake this training?

A: You can check your training summary by logging into GEMS, clicking on Learning & Development, then clicking on Training Summary from the menu on the left. Your GEMS Training Summary will show you every training you have taken at USF and the date it was completed.

Q: I completed the trainings, but I don’t see them listed in my training summary in GEMS.

A: It can take GEMS up to 24 hours to update with your completed courses. If the course still doesn’t appear in your training summary after 24 hours, contact the Title IX Coordinator at denney1@usf.edu.

Q: Can I take this training on my phone?

A: Both trainings are interactive and require the learner to complete activities within the presentation. For this reason, it is best to take these trainings on a computer or laptop rather than a cell phone.

Q: Do I have to take this training in one sitting?

A: No. You may start and stop the training as needed. The training will record your progress.

Q: Who do I contact if I have a question or comment about the content of this training?

A: Contact the Title IX Coordinator at denney1@usf.edu.

Q: Who do I contact if I am having technical difficulties with Canvas or the course?

A: Contact IT at help@usf.edu.

Q: What if I have a question not answered here?
